The Khemka family

The Khemka family is a Marwari family with roots in Ratangarh, Rajasthan that moved to Assam in the 1850s and then to Bihar in the 1920s. The family started its businesses in grain and commodities trading and went on to build a significant iron ore mining and export business by the time of Indian Independence.

SUN Group’s chairman, Nand Khemka, was born in Kahalgaon, Bihar as the youngest of 8 children. He moved to Kolkata to study Economics at St. Xavier’s College and then completed his Masters in International Economics and Business at Columbia Business School in New York in 1956. He then moved to live in Japan for a year before returning to India where he established the company’s business in Delhi.
